Move Out Guide

Getting Ready to Move Out?

student moving out with their parent

As the semester comes to a close, it’s time to start planning your move out of campus housing. A little preparation can make the process easier and help you avoid unexpected charges. Follow the steps below to prepare your space, return your keys and wrap up your time living on campus.

Whether you’re heading home, moving off campus or transitioning to summer housing, Residence Life & Housing is here to help make your move-out as smooth as possible.

Before you go: Check your UCCS email regularly for move-out reminders, deadlines and important instructions.

Move-Out at a Glance

  • Move-out deadline: All residents must vacate by the published deadline unless an approved late stay or other housing arrangement applies.
  • Remove all belongings: Take everything with you unless you have an approved arrangement for summer housing.
  • Clean your space: Remove trash, clean your room and leave shared spaces in good condition.
  • Return your keys: Use the Express Check-Out drop box at your village.
  • Donate responsibly: Give unwanted items a second life through Ditch the Dumpster.

Plan Your Move

Start early to avoid the end-of-semester rush.

  • Confirm your official move-out deadline and any instructions sent to your UCCS email.
  • Arrange transportation and coordinate pickup with family or friends.
  • Pack belongings you no longer need before finals week.
  • Check closets, drawers, storage areas and shared spaces for personal items.
  • Return borrowed items and collect any mail or packages.

Need more time? Late stays require advance approval and are not guaranteed. Review the Late Stay Request Form and submit your request by the applicable deadline.

Clean Your Room or Apartment

Leave your space clean and ready for the next resident.

  • Remove all personal belongings from bedrooms, bathrooms and common areas.
  • Empty trash and recycling and dispose of waste in designated locations.
  • Clean surfaces, floors and any shared kitchen or bathroom areas.
  • Empty and clean refrigerators and remove all food.
  • Check under beds, inside closets and in cabinets.
  • Make sure your suite or apartment's shared spaces are clean before the last resident leaves.

A quick reminder: Residents may be charged for cleaning, damages or trash left behind. In suites and apartments, charges for unclean common areas may apply to all residents.

Complete Express Check-Out

Once your room is empty and clean, complete your check-out by returning your keys.

  • Remove all belongings and finish cleaning your space.
  • Return your keys using the Express Check-Out drop box in your village.
  • Alpine Village and Alpine Apartments: La Plata lobby, across from the laundry room.
  • Summit Village: Monarch lobby, in the door next to the Residence Life & Housing office in Suite 1102.

Follow any additional check-out instructions provided by Residence Life & Housing. Returning your keys is an important step in completing your move-out.

Double-Check Before You Leave

  • All personal belongings have been removed.

  • Trash and recycling have been disposed of properly.

  • Your room and shared spaces have been cleaned.

  • Your refrigerator is empty and clean.

  • All windows are closed and lights are turned off.

  • You have collected your mail and packages.

  • Your keys have been returned.

  • You have checked your UCCS email for any final instructions.

Summer Housing

Students who need summer school housing may apply until May 1st. Remember that you must be enrolled in a summer OR fall course to live in summer school housing.

Students who have applied for summer school housing will stay in their current room space until the Friday immediately after Spring move-out. On that day, you can pick up your keys from the La Plata front desk for your summer school room in Crestone and begin transitioning to your new room assignment over the weekend. You must complete your move, and you must return the keys to your old room space to the front desk by the Monday after you pick up your keys. If you are not here during this time to move your belongings, you will need to remove everything before the Friday move date and then move back into your summer school space when you return to campus.

Note for Summer School residents: It’s unlikely, but we’ll email you if your room is available earlier than that Friday.

Mail & Packages

Mail and package pick-up will end for the Spring term on the last day of finals week at noon. Please plan accordingly. Any packages or mail pieces delivered after the last day of finals will be returned to the sender or forwarded to your chosen forwarding address if you submitted one through StarRez. Any packages delivered over the summer cannot be forwarded. You will need to make arrangements to get your package or it will be returned to the sender. We will not hold packages over the summer. Students attending summer school will continue to receive their mail and packages from the La Plata front desk as usual.

If you need your mail forwarded over the summer, please submit your mail forwarding address utilizing the Mail Forward address form on the Housing Application Portal.

Parking

The following special parking regulations will be imposed during certain high traffic times of the year. Keep your eyes on your UCCS student email about when these special parking provisions go into effect.

Alpine Residents

  • Visitors may park their vehicles on level 4 of the Alpine Garage without purchasing a parking permit or paying for hourly parking.
  • You may park in a 5/15/30-minute loading zone for up to 1 hour to move out between 8 am and 10 pm. You may never park in a fire lane or disabled space without a state-issued disabled permit.
  • You may park on the Cucharas/La Plata side of the pedestrian spine walkway between the buildings for up to one hour between 8 am and 10 pm.
    • The Pedestrian Spine is a fire lane; thus, a minimum of a 12-foot roadway must be maintained at all times on the south side (Crestone side) of the sidewalk for fire department access. Anyone not parking on the Cucharas/LaPlata side of the sidewalk will receive a $140 fire lane citation. Parking on the spine will only be allowed 8a-10p and will be strictly limited to just one hour.
  • Parking in a posted fire lane (other than the Pedestrian Spine as described above), loading dock, roadway, or disabled space without a state-issued handicap permit, or any other reserved space will not be allowed at any time and will result in a citation.
  • There will be some campus-wide parking permit requirement waivers during the period of move out. During these days, you may park in any regular permitted space on campus without having to have a permit or pay for parking.

Many students will need to use these areas for move-out, so please be respectful of each other and abide by the parking rules, especially not staying in loading zones for longer than one hour. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Parking Services.

Summit Residents

Parking Services allows special parking accommodations for move-out at certain areas of campus from 8 am – 10 pm. These special parking accommodations are valid from 8 am to 10 pm. If you need to park close to your dorm room to move out, please follow the rules below:

  • Gateway Garage levels 4 and 5 will allow Summit Village Residents to move out. Visitors may park their vehicles without purchasing a parking permit or paying for hourly parking.
  • You may park in a 5/15/30-minute loading zone in lot 429 for up to 1 hour to move out between 8 am and 10 pm. You may never park in a fire lane or disabled space without a state-issued disabled permit.
  • You may park on the side of the pedestrian sidewalk between Summit Village and Columbine Hall for up to one hour between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. Please enter the spine from the east (in front of Columbine Hall) and leave to the west (near Copper) so that traffic flows in one direction only.
    • The Pedestrian Spine is a fire lane, and thus, a minimum of a 12-foot roadway must be maintained at all times on the north side of the sidewalk for fire department access. Anyone not parking on the south side of the sidewalk will receive a $140 fire lane citation. Parking on the spine will only be allowed from 8 am to 10 pm and will be strictly limited to just one hour.
  • Parking in a posted fire lane (other than the Pedestrian Spine as described above), loading dock, roadway, or disabled space without a state-issued handicap permit, or any other reserved space will not be allowed at any time and will result in a citation.
  • There will be some campus-wide parking permit requirement waivers during the period of move-out.
